Art Donation Policy

Objective
This policy outlines the guidelines under which VPL handles offers of art donations.

Scope
This policy applies to any offers of donations of visual art to the Library.

Indigenous Considerations

This policy applies to all art, including Indigenous art or art that is relevant to Indigenous communities. Art created and offered for donation by xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), or səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations may be given special consideration. 

Policy Statements

1. General
Offers of donations of visual art will normally be declined and referred to appropriate institutions such as the Vancouver Art Gallery or the Museum of Anthropology. This reflects that the collection of visual art is not the mandate of the Library.

2. Exceptions
2.1  Donations of art may be accepted with the approval of the Chief Librarian & CEO or delegate when the work has particular relevance for the Library and is appropriate for public display. 
2.2  Costs associated with accepting a gift of a work of art such as obtaining an appraisal for tax purposes will be the responsibility of the donor unless otherwise approved by the Director of Corporate Services & CFO.
 

Non-compliance Consequences

Non-compliance with this policy by staff may result in disciplinary measures, up to and including termination of employment.
