Looking Ahead to a 'New Normal'

We’re entering a new phase in our response to COVID-19, and I’d like to share with you some of our plans to reintroduce library services and work towards the reopening of VPL locations.
First and foremost, thank you for your ongoing support and understanding during this unprecedented time. Many of you have reached out to us to share your thoughtful words as we transitioned to providing library services through our Digital Library.
With the release of BC’s Restart Plan, the provincial government identified libraries among a list of services that could prepare to reopen starting mid-May. Like the communities we serve, every library has different needs that will inform their individual timelines for reopening. At VPL, we’re working with health direction and our Board to determine a timeline that meets the needs and readiness of our community.
The health and well-being of our staff and patrons is important to us, which is why VPL is planning a phased approach to gradually restoring services.
Currently, we are planning to introduce a takeout model at select locations, and a computer lab downtown for those who don’t have computers with internet access and rely on the library for this. We will be releasing more information on these initiatives in the coming weeks.
As we continue to develop a vision for what the 'new normal' looks like for VPL, thank you to everyone who completed our survey to help us understand what is important to you as we evaluate ways to deliver library services while meeting health and safety protocols.
Your continued support means so much to all of us at VPL. Our patrons play an important role in making the library what it is. On behalf of the entire library, we miss you and hope you’ll continue this journey with us to a new normal.
Stay healthy and safe,
Christina de Castell
