How Do I Become a Baker?

Bakers “usually” require:
  • completion of high school
  • completion of a three- or four-year apprenticeship program
    or
  • a college program in baking

In some cases on-the-job training may be provided instead of formal education.

In British Columbia, trade certification for bakers is available, although not mandatory.

Baker is a nationally designated trade under the Red Seal Program. This means you can work anywhere in Canada if you obtain Red Seal endorsement of your certification.

To get certified as a baker, you can either: 

  • complete an apprenticeship/education program as outlined by SkilledTradesBC and successfully write the Red Seal Exam

OR

  • if you have significant work experience in a trade but have never been certified in Canada, you may apply to challenge the certification – you will still be required to write the Red Seal Exam
