Education and Experience

Journalists must have a college diploma or a university degree in journalism or a related field (i.e., communications). Other requirements may include:

  • A university degree in English or history with proven writing skills.
  • One to two years of experience for daily newspapers
  • Newspaper layout experience and proven competency with a digital camera

Reporters are not required to get post-secondary training, but, you are not likely to get a job without it. You can earn a degree or diploma in journalism or communications. Many programs offer an internship in a newsroom.
