How Do I Become a Driller or a Blaster?

Surface Drillers

  • Certification is not mandatory to work as a surface driller in BC, but trades training as a Heavy Equipment Operator may be recommended by some employers
  • Completion of secondary school is usually required
  • Experience as a heavy equipment operator may be required
  • On the job training under the supervision of experienced workers is usually provided

Blasters

  • In BC, anyone working as a blaster must be certified with WorkSafeBC
  • Completion of secondary school is usually required
  • On the job training is usually provided
  • Experience as a blaster helper in surface mining and quarrying or construction may be required

Oil & gas well drillers

You usually require

  • 3 – 6 months of formal training and at least four years of relevant work experience
  • Completion of health and safety courses through Energy Safety Canada or an affiliated partner
