Educates participants about workplace health and safety using an ESL curriculum model. Participants will improve their language skills while learning about workers' rights in health and safety topics such as workplace violence, preventing back injuries, workplace chemicals (WHMIS) and identification of hazards. They will be able to use this knowledge and information to increase their awareness of health and safety and to become involved in Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) committees at their workplaces.

- Canadian Language Benchmark Placement Test (CLB PT) (within one year)
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS): Academic or General (within two years)

The focus is on Medical English as it is spoken and written around the world in hospitals, doctor offices, and EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) operations. Our program can be used in any kind of medical environment, from private practices, specialized health centres to international clinics or government hospitals.
Requirements: designed for students who are CEFR A2 (pre-intermediate) and up.
Alternative is to pass the FREE online exam, or show proof of an official TOEFL iBT, TOEIC, IELTS, or any recognized international English language equivalency test score. No interview required.

HLTH 1061: Medical English
Participants develop and strengthen their understanding of medical terminology as it is used in a Canadian health care context. Language development will be facilitated through the use of case scenarios, dialogues and discussions related to body systems, medications, and medication administration as well as health care contexts. Through the use of reading for general meaning, word expansions and vocabulary building, internationally-educated health care providers are able to acquire career-specific language development.
Requirements: Satisfactory completion of English Assessment as per TRU OL guidelines if English is a second language. Previous health care education is recommended.

CELBAN Test Prep (ELSK 1004)
This is a short test preparation course for the Canadian English Language Benchmark Assessment for Nursing, CELBAN.
It has been designed for internationally educated nurses applying for licensing to the BC College of Nurses & Midwives (BCN&M), and who are required to demonstrate English language proficiency before entry to practice.
Requirements: Must be an internationally-trained nurse with one of the following:
- CLBPT/CLB 8 or above for Listening and CLB 7 or above for Reading
- English Language Assessment with minimum 25 in Listening and 36 in Reading
- IELTS score of minimum 6.5 in Listening and 6.0 in Reading

Health Care Assistant – EAL
The program is divided into three levels. Each level consists of theory, laboratory practice, English language instruction, and clinical experience. The theory component is delivered through discussion groups, student presentations, lectures, online activities, demonstrations and guest speakers. Students apply the theory component in the laboratory and clinical settings.
Requirements: must have a high Canadian Language Benchmark Placement Test (CLBPT) score for admission that has been completed within the last year, with a Listening 6, Speaking 6, Reading 6 and Writing 5.

Helps students who need to improve their communication skills before they enter into the workforce, as well as provides skills and experience working in the classroom and lab, and then through practicum.
Requirements: evidence of English Language Proficiency (TOEFL, IELTS, CLB PT, CELPIP or CAEL) within 1-2 years of testing, and an overall score of 50 and no section less than 40.
