Intensive English

This intense and fast-paced course is designed to challenge students to improve quickly. Monthly exams, progress reports and in-class projects assist students to improve their English competency. The program offers a comprehensive curriculum that covers the four essential skill areas: listening, speaking, reading and writing.  Student progress is measured throughout the program through exams, presentations and projects. Upon successful completion students will receive a certificate of completion.

Requirements: Have proven English proficiency of at least a Canadian Language Benchmark of 3/4 (lower intermediate).

ENGQ 0084 Directed Studies: Advanced Writing and Communications

Students will work intensively on improving their writing and/or communication skills. Student will, in consultation with the instructor, choose and complete assignments at the Advanced level pertinent to their specific goals. They will study in a self-paced, continuous-intake mode.

ENGQ 0085 Directed Study: Advanced Reading

Students at advanced level will work in a self-paced individualized study mode on individualized, specific objectives. They will work on reading improvement, listening comprehension, spelling improvement, vocabulary development, and/or reading in content areas appropriate to the students’ goals.

Power Pronunciation

Sound more natural and confident when you speak English by learning about rhythm, stress patterns, linking sounds and intonation. Understand your pronunciation as it relates to sounds that may not exist in your first language to improve the clarity of your English and increase others’ understanding of your speech. Class activities include group practice, discussions on a variety of topics, and games and pronunciation exercises.

Requirements: participants in this course should already have at least an intermediate to advanced level of English.

Power Pronunciation Part 2

Builds on the foundational learning and practice from Power Pronunciation (above). Understand how other first languages influence spoken English, and learn to speak English naturally, clearly and confidently.

English Language Studies (ELS) certificate program

The English Language Studies (ELS) certificate program is structured around four levels of English language ability with certificates and courses from intermediate to pre-university levels:

  • Intermediate certificate (level 50)
  • Advanced I certificate (level 60)
  • Advanced II certificate (level 70)
  • Academic certificate (level 80)

Across the four levels of the program, core language skills—i.e., interactive communications, reading, and writing—are integrated with academic study and socio-cultural skills with increasing complexity as language proficiency increases.

A blend of asynchronous (online activities completed on your own within a flexible schedule) and synchronous (real-time online sessions with your class via Zoom) delivery formats. Instructors will guide you through theme-based learning activities during class time, with the addition of self-guided activities to be done through the online learning platform.

Improves participant’s English for real-world scenarios such as job interviews, informal conversations, and public speaking while attaining Canadian Language Benchmarks Levels 8-9.

Improve Your Pronunciation Advanced Focus A (ELSK 0666)

Promotes autonomous learning and the teaching of strategies that lead to improved pronunciation, fluency, delivery and listening skills. Key components of the course are oral journals; oral presentations; phonological analysis and practice of authentic speech forms and features; phonological analysis and practice of the supra-segmental (stress, rhythm, intonation) sound system of English; contrasting the supra-segmental (stress, rhythm, intonation) sound system of English with learner language. Course delivery involves language and content appropriate to CLB levels 7 through 9.
