Geordie Roberts is our Musical Director and Carolyn Bergstrand is our Choreographer.Marjorie Prime
CompanyNorth Vancouver Community PlayersPlaywrightJordan HarrisonDirectorPeter ZednikProducerLiz MassilAudition DatesSun, Nov 24, 1-4 pm & Mon, Nov 25, 7-9 pmAudition VenueSilver Harbour Seniors’ Activity Centre 144 East 22nd Street, North VancouverAudition RequirementsMarjorie – Marjorie is a recently-widowed 85-year-old whose health issues have forced her to move in with her daughter and son-in-law. Her mobility impaired, Marjorie lives more and more in memories that are frustratingly muddled by encroaching dementia. Her youth as a cultured classical musician with a trail of admirers was cut short by a family tragedy from which she has never emotionally recovered. The colourful events of her life have fashioned Marjorie into a complex composite: imperious, flirtatious and witty, but also tormented, bitter and frightened.
Walter – Walter is Marjorie’s late husband - or rather a “prime” re-creation of Walter as he was in his 30s. Polite, pleasant and comforting, this version of Walter represents Marjorie’s most favourable memories of him. A handsome, successful businessman, Walter beat out numerous other suitors for Marjorie’s hand with his no-nonsense offer of a dependable, comfortable lifestyle.
Tess – Tess is Marjorie’s “disappointment daughter”, the second child who could never attract as much attention or affection as her older brother. Now in her late 40s/early 50s, Tess has adult children of her own who treat her with tolerance at best, iciness at worst. Instead she plays “mom” to her own mother, still pursuing recognition and appreciation, but receiving little of either. Only her husband Jon champions her: but is his support a sign of love or just patronizing? Tess’ mid-life crisis evolves into full-blown depression as she pulls further and further away from family and friends.
Jon – Jon, also late 40s/early 50s, is Tess’s husband. A warm, generous spirit, Jon teases, cajoles and otherwise labours to maintain harmony in his prickly household. A radical in his youth, Jon had a challenging time winning over his crusty, snobbish mother-in-law. Over the years he has grown to be Marjorie’s favourite companion, which he hopes will make Tess happy – but it only seems to make her jealous. Jon’s optimistic world view is tested when relations with Tess worsen until they become unsalvageable.

THE PLAY: It’s the year 2047 and artificial intelligence has solved all our problems. . . or has it created new ones? Marjorie Prime imagines a future in which AI can generate “primes”, life-sized replicas of deceased loved ones. Primes can be programmed to copy human appearance, movement, voice - they can even mimic behavioural idiosyncrasies. Although designed to provide comfort, primes lack the intrinsic human drive to connect with others and the ineffable qualities of compassion, disappointment, jealousy and love. Also, while primes can memorize facts and figures, the imperfect nature of human memory causes our identities to de-construct and morph over time. The shifting dynamics among four family members illuminate what separates people from pixels in this Pulitzer Prize nominee by the screenwriter of the popular TV series Orange is the New Black. This is NVCP’s entry in the 2025 Theatre BC North Shore Zone Festival.• No appointments are necessary: first-come, first-served

Synopsis: Jonathan Hardcastle’s friend Samuel Hickory Wood has passed away, and he wants to leave 10,000 pounds to Samuel’s son Billy. Not knowing where Billy is, he has placed an ad in the paper to find him, but omits the proviso that no one can claim the money if Samuel has more than one child. Billy and his friend Charlie turn up to claim the inheritance, but are derailed when Billy’s twin, Rupert, also shows up. Things go even further awry when their triplet, Michael, arrives. Now Charlie must keep the assorted Hickory Woods concealed from Jonathan in order to sign the deal.
