Secret City is seeking additional experienced and dynamic performers for an ongoing immersive and theatrical murder mystery dining experience that revolves around a group of renowned chefs. In the years following their graduation from culinary school, each member of this famed group of chefs has found success. But things take a dark turn when Maribelle discovers a dark secret about one of their classmates. Determined to expose the culprit, Maribelle designs an elaborate event attended by a who’s who of the culinary industry, at which she will reveal the truth.

Casting additional performers for the roles of: Olivia Polk, Susan Greene, Alan Cross, David Hayes.

A note about performance style to keep in mind for your audition: We are looking for performers who can make big, bold, confident choices with their characters, and present fully-realized and familiar personality types for comedic effect.

Alan Cross Age 30-40 Male Occupation: Celebrity chef. Alan is the most colourful of his classmates - he’s loud and brash, cocky and opinionated and needs to be the center of attention to feel like he’s loved. Alan’s totally chill on the surface, but underneath is very insecure and anxious, which causes him to take shortcuts in life whenever he can. He knows he’s a phony but he’s too far into his career to come clean now. When he gets anxious he becomes louder and more obnoxious. Throughout high school he got away from his depressing home life by working long hours in restaurant kitchens, where he loved the camaraderie vibes and the free food. Think: Matty Matheson or Jonah Hill in Superbad.

David Hayes Age 30-40 Male Occupation: Former pastry chef turned food truck proprietor. David is the most reserved of the group, keeping his emotions hidden, and offering candid constructive feedback even if not always delivered with tact. Occasionally his emotions will boil over in a high strung outburst of frustration and rage. He views his classmates as a serious, professional group of colleagues rather than a group of friends. He preferred when they would work together intensely rather than hanging out casually. His focus and meticulousness earned him much respect as he worked at various restaurants to pay his bills, and he quickly found his calling in the culinary industry. Think: House from House or Benedict Cumberbatch in Doctor Strange.

Susan Greene Age 30-40 Female Occupation: Vegan chef and health/wellness personality. Susan always tries to take an optimistic view of everything, even at inappropriate times. She channels an almost spiritual zen, which she attributes to her veganism and wellness lifestyle, though this can come off as “flaky” to others. She’s usually found wearing flowy earth tones and carries a little fanny pack with her everywhere she goes, inside of which she keeps culinary touches like nutritional yeast, sage, little bottles of coconut aminos or Palo Santo, cannabis gummies, and sample bottles of her Vegan Moonlight Body Mist. Think: Gwenyth Paltrow or Zoe Kravitz in Big Little Lies.

Olivia Polk Age 30-40 Female Occupation: Restaurateur. Olivia rocks a bohemian chic aesthetic: she has good taste and a good eye for quality. She is just as happy to grab some street meat for lunch as she is to dine on the most expensive rooftop patio in the city. Her upbringing has made her a savvy business woman and she uses her wealthy “it” girl status to masterfully manipulate people into doing things she wants, feigning obliviousness when really she’s fully in control. She’s well connected throughout the city and works hard to constantly forge new connections. Olivia is a constant presence at the hottest parties in town, name dropping her celebrity connections and making new ones everywhere she goes. Like a savvy influencer, Olivia is always “on.” Think: Emily Blunt in Devil Wears Prada or Blake Lively in Gossip Girl.

As each woman becomes accustomed to her duties and patients, they reveal more personal details to one another and through letters to loved ones. Maggie misses her close friend she lived with back home and worries for their future together. Christy writes to her soldier husband, but she knows there’s a difference between the life she should lead with him and the one she wants. Through it all, the three women find friendship, independence, power, and influence in a place where men, once again, are trying to destroy the world.

  • Hurricane Diane

    Audition Dates
    February 25 and 27
    Audition Venue
Amenity Room 789 Jervis St. Vancouver
    Audition Requirements

All five characters have lengthy monologues, the longest being Diane followed by Beth. All actors must be comfortable and confident with onstage displays of affection with other actors, which may include kissing, caressing, embracing, and potentially lifting and carrying, and simulated intimacy. Strong movement or dance training is an asset but not required, as the ending involves quite a bit of creative movement including crawling, writhing, reaching, etc, which will be choreographed.
    Diane: 30s - 50s, non-binary or gender non-conforming. 2SLGBTIA+
Bacchus, Bromius, Dionysus. . . God of vegetation, fruitfulness, wine, fertility, ecstasy, insanity, ritual madness … and theatre. An Ancient Goddess, powerful and irresistible, who has come to the suburbs of New Jersey in the form of a queer masc woman and disguised as a gardener. Diane is magnetic and confident, a “butch charm factory”, and singularly focused on her goals - which include seducing suburban moms to be her thralls and acolytes in order to build a cult to wage a war against global warming. Simmering beneath the smooth-talking exterior is the unstoppable rage and passion befitting of an ancient and powerful goddess. Must be confident delivering monologues of several pages in length.
    Carol: 30s - 50s, any ethnicity, she/her.
Chatty and dreamy, wrapped up in picture-perfect ideals and dependent on her friends and neighbours for the little joys that she relies on to get by from day to day. With a mostly-absent husband and a soul-sucking job, she would never complain or let on that her life isn’t perfect, but her little comforts and the approval of her friends are all that bring her joy and she holds onto her ideals with an iron grip. She stalwartly rejects Diane’s charms and demands, no matter the cost.
    Pam: 30s - 50s, any ethnicity, she/her
Bossy and outspoken and sure of herself, Pam dresses exclusively in animal print and is always bedecked in fabulous jewelry. She is opinionated and a take-charge personality, with a penchant for DIY disaster survival preparation. She is the last to give in to Diane’s charms and demands.
    Renee: 30s - 50s, BIPOC, she/her
Chic and elegant with an adventurous spirit. Renee is the editor of HGTV magazine and is very sure of herself without being overbearing like Pam. She wears exclusively designer loungewear and has a fun and eclectic past. She is the second to embrace Diane’s charms and demands.
    Beth: 20's-30's,any ethnicity, she/her
Gentle, hurting, distracted, needy. Beth is falling apart after her husband left her. She has worked hard all her life to suppress herself and has been a people pleaser.
Two to Four movement actors will play the ‘role’ of the gardens in the Cul-De-Sac, slowly becoming wilder and more chaotic. Severe poses held with perfect stillness, interrupted by flowing, sudden, frightening, movement. Physically interact with the characters and with the audience. Not a spoken role, other than soft chanting and occasional wailing. If auditioning specifically for the Garden, and not any of the other roles, please prepare a movement piece of max one minute, with or without music. For more information, contact director Angie McLeod at thisisangiemcleod@gmail.com
Please sign up for a timeslot
Auditions will consist of a monologue from the play, and material will be emailed to you upon sign-up for the audition. A Reader will be in the room to read any other characters’ lines that intersperse your monologue, and you will be provided a chair to use if you want to. The director will also ask you questions about your interpretation of the role(s).
Recommended starting and stopping points are indicated on the sides, however if you passionately prefer another section of the monologue feel free to prepare what you like from the sides, just keep your selection to the same size or shorter than the suggestion selection.
If you are auditioning for more than one character please only prepare one monologue, but you may select a short line or two from the alternate character’s sides to show us a ‘snippet’ of you in that role.
Callbacks will consist of scene reading with other actors, and that material will be emailed to you if you are offered a callback.

    Production Dates
    June 12-15, 2025 (5 shows)
    Notes

Hurricane Diane. Dionysus. . . God of vegetation, fruitfulness, wine, fertility, ecstasy, insanity, ritual madness … theatre. An Ancient Goddess, powerful and irresistible, who has come to the suburbs of New Jersey in the form of a queer masc woman and disguised as a gardener. Her goal; to convert the tidy homeowners of the cul-de-sac into her thralls and acolytes, to rebuild an ancient cult of ritual and carnal pleasure, and subvert the concrete land of curbs and lawns and fences into the battleground against the wrath of climate change - one garden at a time. As a Hurricane whips its way up the coast, and the suburban ladies hum and haw over the benefits of indigenous plants and permaculture, an argument about landscaping suddenly becomes the crux upon which the fate of the world hinges.
