Tsleil-Waututh storyteller Les George is the new VPL Indigenous Storyteller in Residence
VANCOUVER, B.C. – Seasoned storyteller and cultural guide Les George has been named the Vancouver Public Library 2023 Indigenous Storyteller in Residence.
George is a member of the səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nation and is the grandson of the late Tsleil-Waututh Chief Dan George. He is also connected through family to the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) Nations. For decades, George worked as a First Nations support worker with at-risk youth and those with special needs—sharing stories, drumming, songs and restorative justice circles. In his current work as a cultural guide, George shares Tsleil-Waututh songs, legends and information about village sites while paddling Burrard Inlet and Indian Arm in replica ocean-going canoes or sea kayaks.
"Sharing Indigenous stories and culture has always been part of my family’s long history,” says Les George. “I’m honoured to be continuing this legacy in my new role at the library. This is an opportunity to share traditional songs, legends and history with those in Vancouver who may not otherwise have the opportunity. I look forward to creating these special moments that bring together people of all ages, cultures and backgrounds.”
This spring, George is planning a number of events for all ages at the library. These events will highlight Tsleil-Waututh culture and teachings through children’s storytimes, cultural sharing events, special presentations and more.
The VPL Indigenous Storyteller in Residence has played a unique and valuable role at the library since it began in 2008. Using storytelling and other narrative tools as a way to highlight and share Indigenous traditions and contemporary culture, the program seeks to honour Indigenous cultures and promote intercultural understanding and communication between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. More information about the program can be found at vpl.ca/storyteller.
Meet Les George at an evening of song and storytelling on Thursday, March 9 (6:30 p.m.) at VPL’s Central Library downtown. George will share traditional songs, drumming and words about his Nation and family. He’ll also be sharing the gift of the Coast Salish Anthem, created by his late grandfather, Chief Dan George. The event is free. Get the details at vpl.ca/events.
