Nlaka’pamux and Secwepemc storyteller Chris Bose is the new VPL Indigenous Storyteller in Residence

Vancouver, B.C. - Writer, musician and multi-disciplinary artist Chris Bose has been named the 2025 Indigenous Storyteller in Residence at Vancouver Public Library.

Hailing from Kamloops, B.C., Bose is a member of the Nlaka’pamux and Secwepemc Nations and has been a professional storyteller for almost 30 years. His work has been published in a variety of publications and exhibited in galleries. He has also shared traditional Nlaka’pamux and Secwepemc stories at schools, festivals, and cultural events across Canada.

“The stories I share come from my grandmother and grandfather, my Yeah Ya7 and Spa7 Pu La7,” says Bose. “They were revered storytellers who travelled across Canada in the 1970s, and I now continue their legacy. I’m looking forward to sharing these stories and my culture to help others – both Indigenous and non-Indigenous – find their voice.”

During his residency, Bose will spend part of the time developing a series of Nlaka’pamux and Secwepemc short stories and working on a new digital project featuring works in the horror, comedy, and traditional genres. Bose also plans to embark on an “On the Road with Chris Bose” tour, bringing storytelling programs and workshops to libraries and neighbourhoods across Vancouver.

The VPL Indigenous Storyteller in Residence has played a unique and valuable role at the library since it began in 2008. Using storytelling and other narrative tools as a way to highlight and share Indigenous traditions and contemporary culture, the program seeks to honour Indigenous cultures and promote intercultural understanding and communication between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. More information about the program can be found at vpl.ca/storyteller.
