Each Digital Essentials series contains a set of classes that focus on a different area of technology. Get started today!
Computer Essentials
Get to know your computer, from the mouse and keyboard to creating and saving files, and the basics of file management. These are introductory classes. No experience required.
Classes on this topic:
- Get to Know Your Computer: A basic hands-on introduction. Get to know the main parts of a computer (inside and out), and learn about how computers connect to the Internet. This is an introductory class for beginners and we are working with an inactive computer; no previous experience using computers is required.
- Use the Mouse and Keyboard: A hands-on interactive introduction to using the mouse and keyboard. This is an introductory class for beginners who want to practice and improve their skills. No previous experience using computers is required.
- Create and Format Documents: Learn the tools to create basic documents, including creating, formatting, editing and transferring. This class is ideal for those looking to develop the skills in software programs such as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Google Drive and others. Basic ability to use a computer, including the mouse, is required.
- Get to Know File Management: Learn the basic principles of file management: identify file types; distinguish files from folders; identify file storage methods; change or create folders; copy files and folders from one location to another. This class is for those looking to organize, save, and transfer digital documents. Basic ability to use a computer, including the mouse, is required.
Internet Essentials
Learn the basics about the Internet! Become familiar with website navigation, effective Internet searching and online privacy. These are introductory classes. Basic computer skills required.

- Get the Most Out of Internet Searching: Online searching has become a day-to-day activity for most people, and this class can help you pick up the skills and techniques to make your searches more efficient, effective, and low-stress. Learners will be be introduced to advanced search strategies, learn some practical search tips to get the best results, and discuss principles that ensure you’re able to think critically about your results.
- Let's Talk About Online Privacy: Find out how to protect your online privacy when using the internet in this discussion-based class. Explore topics like online tracking and identity theft and get some practical advice and, hands-on tips to help you be more secure online. Learners will also be given specific resources and recommendations to help them feel safe, confident, and empowered when using the internet.
- Let's Talk About Participating Online: Explore safe social networking and internet privacy, and learn how to manage your digital identity when you engage with others online. Learn some tips and tricks for safe online participation. Learners will also get curated recommendations for further study and useful resources.
Mobile Device Essentials
Get digital savvy with smartphones, tablets, mobile apps and digital storage. These are introductory classes.

- Get to Know Your iPad or iPhone: Learn how to use your iPad or iPhone in this hands-on, introductory class. Explore your device's iOS operating system, features and settings. Learners are encouraged to bring their Apple device to the workshop.
- Get to Know Your Android Tablet or Smartphone: Learn how to use your Android tablet or smartphone in this hands-on, introductory class. Explore your device's operating system, features and settings and learn how to connect devices to the internet. Learners are encouraged to bring their Android device.
- Get to Know Mobile Apps for iOS: Learn how to find, review and install apps for library services, local information, entertainment and more. Discuss security, privacy and advanced settings. This is a hands-on, introductory class for people who are familiar with the basics of using their Apple iPhone or iPad but want some help understanding apps and using them effectively.
- Get to Know Mobile Apps for Android: Learn how to find, review and install apps for library services, local information, entertainment and more. Discuss security, privacy and advanced settings. This is a hands-on, introductory class for people who are familiar with the basics of using their Android smart phone or tablet but want some help understanding apps and using them effectively.
- Let's Talk About Digital Storage: In this introductory class you’ll learn about the principles of safe digital storage and get a clear, four-step strategy you can use to tackle storage challenges as they (and the warning displays that so often accompany them) pop up. Explore cloud and local storage solutions, and choose the method that works for you!
