Stepping Stones: a Refugee Family's Journey

A river of strangers in search of a place

To be free, to live and laugh, to love again.

In search of a place where bombs did not fall,

Where people did not die on their way to market.

A river of people in search of peace.

Margriet Ruurs has a Master’s degree in Education from SFU, and loves to visit schools to tell children about being a writer and to share her love of playing with language, Margriet has lived in many places, but she now lives on Salt Spring Island, B.C. where she runs a booklovers’ Bed & Breakfast.

Every day for the past 35 years, Nizar Ali Badr has been going to the beach in Latakia, Syria to collect beautiful stones and pebbles of all shapes and sizes. Nizar has created more than 25,000 scenes from daily life in Syria since 2011.
