Overview of the Tourism Industry

Introduction

In 2023, the Tourism industry employed nearly 344,000 workers, representing more than 12% of total employment in the province. Of these, almost half worked in the food and beverage sector, followed by the recreation and entertainment sector, transportation and travel, and accommodation sectors. Future projections suggest an average annual employment growth rate of 1.3% from 2023 to 2033, with an expected 122,900 job openings during this period.

Although growth is anticipated in all sectors between 2023 and 2033, it is expected to be the highest in the accommodation and food services sector.

The current number of workers is unlikely to meet future job demand. Shortages are felt particularly during peak seasons (summer and winter), as well as in resorts and rural communities. Management and leadership skills are also in high demand.

Newcomers to Canada are seen as a key source of talent as tourism organizations seek to meet their hiring needs. The industry has responded by creating a number of programs to attract new workers.
