As part of the City of Vancouver’s Renewable City Strategy and Clean Energy Canada’s Solar Now project, a solar photovoltaic system was installed along the perimeter of the rooftop garden to provide renewable energy to the Central Library.
This pilot project has 52 solar panels that are 350 watts each, generating approximately 16,500 kW of electricity per year, enough to power the LED lights on Level 9 of the Central Library or 1 – 2 average homes in BC.
The system came online during the month of September, 2018 and is estimated to produce between $2,000 to $2,500 of power per year, based on residential electricity rates.
