Considerations When Choosing Indigenous Books

Choosing books to share with children and teens is a powerful way to shape their understanding of the world, and allow them to see themselves represented in books. Indigenous books provide an opportunity to celebrate the richness of Indigenous knowledge and perspectives, offering authentic stories that counter stereotypes and foster respect.

Thoughtful selection is crucial to ensure these books honour Indigenous voices and accurately reflect their experiences. Consider these tips when looking for Indigenous books.

Look for Books by Indigenous Authors and Illustrators

Books by Indigenous authors, illustrators, and publishers are more likely to give you a better understanding of Indigenous history, culture, and lived experiences because of the creator’s personal connection to the story.

Look for Books from the Many Indigenous Communities

On this land now known as British Columbia, there are over 200 First Nations communities. Look for stories that reflect and honour the diversity of Indigenous experience, worldview, culture, language, and history across this land and the rest of the world.

Look for Books that Respect Indigenous Peoples and Cultures

Through the years, there have been incorrect images of Indigenous People in children’s books and media. Instead, choose books that tell stories that show the reality of Indigenous life.

Look for Books set in the Past, the Present, and the Future

Often books written about Indigenous peoples showed them as living in the past, giving a very limited or biased picture. Reading stories set in the past, the present, and the future will give you a more complete understanding of Indigenous history, present-day life, and ways of being.

Look for Books Written in Indigenous Languages

Once banned by governments, Indigenous languages are being brought back. One way is with the publishing of children’s books – a key recommendation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: Calls to Action. Look for books written in one or more Indigenous language (including English/French/other languages) and have Indigenous authors, illustrators, and publishers when possible.
