Digital images found in a regular web search may not be available for personal or commercial use due to copyright restrictions. However, there is a way to do web searches for images using advanced settings to limit results to images that can be used for personal or commercial use.

Limiting Results in Google Images:

  • Go to www.google.ca
  • At the top right, click on Images. You should now see a Google Images search screen.
  • At the bottom right, click on Settings. Select Advanced Search from the popup menu.
  • At the bottom of the page is Usage Rights. This allows you to limit images that are free to use.

Or try the websites listed under the Copyright-Free Images section below. Recommended websites for digital images from libraries, museums, archives or for medicine, science, and the visual arts are also provided. The majority of these images will be subject to copyright restrictions.
