These collections were developed in consultation with community organizations in Vancouver. The Indigenous Collection contains content for all ages, and is for all those who want to gain a better appreciation of First Nations history and culture and want to learn and understand more about Indigenous Peoples.

The Musical Instrument Lending Library at VPL is a collection of instruments that you may borrow using your Vancouver Public Library card. The collection is located at the Central Library. Ask staff for assistance retrieving the instrument you want to borrow. The instruments can be found by searching the library catalogue.

Reading material for adults, teens and children in sixteen languages other than English. Our branch locations have language collections that represent the demographics in their neighbourhoods, while the Central Library offers materials in VPL's full range of languages.

Programs and Activities

We have a wide variety of programs for children in Grades K–7 and their caregivers. Check our Events calendar for the full list. Most are play-based and are designed to support casual, interest-based discovery; foster a love of reading and writing; and make connections with other kids. Group programs for kids in Grades K–7 happen after school, on weekends and during school breaks. Below is a small list of some of our most popular programs.

Children in Grades 2–4 are matched with a Big Buddy teen mentor with the goal of having fun! In Reading Buddies buddy pairs practice reading aloud and participate in activities such as storytelling and games that make literacy fun. In STEAM Buddies the pairs engage in casual and informal STEAM exploration. Due to high demand all Buddies programs are limited to Vancouver residents only.
